2004 JUDGES
Mike Shine
Creative Director
Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners

After graduating from Syracuse University with a degree in Advertising Design, Mike began his career as a junior art director at Needham Harper Worldwide in New York. He landed next at Chiat/Day, where his new title was writer/ art director. ("So which do I fire you as?" He recalls Jay Chiat commenting after their first introduction. Four years later, Jay fired him as a copywriter.)

Early at Chiat/Day, he met art director John Butler. In 1991 the team accepted positions at Goodby Berlin & Silverstein in San Francisco, where they accumulated just enough courage, naivety, and freelance accounts to leave in 1993 and form their own agency.

In the 10 years since BSS began, they've won over 100 major awards, including One Show and D&AD pencils, Clios, Andys, and Cannes Lions. They've included Specialized Bikes, Anheuser Busch, Borders Books, Dreamworks, and Sony among their clients.

Mike spends his non-agency time with his wife and three sons. He spends his non-family time as part of the food chain in the Pacific Ocean. He can be found surfing the shark infested waters of Bolinas, CA- where 15 whole months have passed since the last Great White attack. Mike believes that by wearing Old Spice cologne and a fossilized shark tooth pendant, sharks will avoid him. He also has a photo of Geddy Lee taped to the bottom of his board. So far so good.
